Queensland's Solar Atlas
Queensland has the natural resources necessary to become a renewable energy leader, and the government is developing a collection of renewable energy maps to help lead clean energy companies to prime development sites in the state. These maps to date include solar and wind and are a key initiative of the Queensland Renewable Energy Plan. The Coastal Geothermal Energy Initiative will further enhance mapping data available for the Queensland Coast.
Queensland’s Solar Atlas has now been publicly released and provides a comprehensive and up-to-date map of solar energy resources. Complementing this, both the Solar Atlas and Wind Map now contain additional information on key infrastructure such as electricity and natural gas transmission infrastructure, land and water resources and meteorological information. The resource maps, combined with the additional information, help to identify the best potential sites to develop commercial projects in Queensland.
Queensland's Solar Atlas has been developed by Entura Hydro Tasmania and is now available through the Queensland Government's Interactive Resource and Tenure Maps system. The mapping data is freely available to download.
How to view the maps
Visit the Interactive Resources and Tenure Maps system, and click on 'Connect to interactive resources and tenure maps' and then select 'Solar’ from the ‘Renewable Resources' menu option on the left.
A guide to using Queensland’s Solar Atlas (PDF - 2.02MB) is available to assist you in using the map.
Do the bright thing - help build a virtual solar power station for Queensland
Town by town, we're working together to build a virtual solar power station for Queensland. Already we've doubled Queensland's use of solar energy to 500 MW in less than two years, three years ahead of schedule. You can contribute to the virtual solar power station too by doing the bright thing and installing a solar hot water system or solar PV system on your home.
